The Ministry of Ecology and Environment: The National Carbon Market will launch online transaction in July
The reporter learned from the Ministry of Ecology and Environment on July 8 that the national trading market of carbon emission rights has completed all preparations for the launch of the transaction and will start the online transaction at an appropriate time in July.
At the State Council executive meeting held on July 7, it was clearly stated that on the basis of trials, the country will launch the national trading market of carbon emission rights for the power generation industry at an appropriate time in July this year. The industries covered will be expanded later on and use market mechanisms to control and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Meanwhile, the meeting also requested to promote green and low-carbon development, establish monetary policy tools to support carbon emission reduction, and support the development of clean energy, energy conservation and environmental protection, and carbon emission reduction technologies in a steady, orderly, precise and direct manner, and leverage more social funds to promote carbon emission reduction.
Li Gao, Director of the Department of Climate Change Response of the Ministry of Ecology and Environment, revealed at the 2021 China Eco-Environment Industry Summit Forum that the Ministry of Ecology and Environment is accelerating the construction of the national carbon market, and will launch a smooth operation of the national trading market of carbon emission rights in the power generation industry. On this basis, gradually expand the industry coverage, enrich the types of transactions and trading methods, realize the stable and effective operation and healthy development of the national carbon market, and effectively play the important role of the trading market of carbon emission rights in controlling greenhouse gas emissions and achieving the goal of carbon peak and carbon neutrality.
This year is the first fulfillment period of the national carbon market. More than 2,000 power generation companies need to complete their tasks within half a year from the launch of the carbon market to the end of this year. At the same time, more and more industries are gradually being included in the national carbon market. Up to now, the Ministry of Ecology and Environment has successively issued documents formally entrusting relevant industry associations in the three industries of building materials, steel and petrochemicals to carry out work related to the inclusion of the national carbon market.
